W. Putin has appointed that this will be the “greenest” OG ever.  Sochi is situated  in Caucausus Region of Russia.  This wild beauty  region is protected by Sochi National Park and the and the bordering buffer zone of the Western Caucasus reserve with status of a UNESCO World Heritage site.  It’s  hard to believe that without international control principles of sustainable development will be preserved.
This concern is  confirmed by the  report of a UNESCO monitoring team which  visited Sochi in April 2008. It asserts that  facilities are  too close to the buffer zones and other boundaries of the reserves.
We support NGOs in they endeavour  to protect one of the last wild alpine areas at the eastern edge of Europe, with many unique plant and animal species, from irreversible devastation.

Read letters to UNESCO and articles below to find out about the threats to the nature reserves and how Russian government  influences NGOs (f.e. WWF-Russia) to pay off their pressure.

Imereti residents demand to stop factories located in the territory of ornithological park PDF Print E-mail

Residents of the Imereti Lowland in Sochi complain of contamination of the environmental and noises, which exceed the standards, emitted and generated by the three factories belonging to the State Corporation "Olympstroy." According to local citizens, the factories of high hazard degree were placed on the lands initially allocated for an ornithological park.

Last March three factories - of reinforced concrete articles, rubber-bitumen products and asphalt plant, which make the orders of the "Olympstroy", - were built in the territory of residential districts of the state farm "Rossiya" in the area of Staroshkolnaya, Staroklubnaya and Polevaya. According to residents of these streets, the factories work round the clock.

The Imereti residents tell that the factories are 500 meters off the resort sea zone and some 40-125 meters off the dwelling houses. In their numerous appeals to Russian "Rospotrebnadzor", "Rostekhnadzor" (Federal Agencies for Consumer and Technical Supervision), Public Prosecutor, President and Prime Minister, they insist that these hazardous for human life and health facilities, located in the area forbidden for such accommodation, should be immediately closed.

Vladimir Orobei, head of the Sochi "Rospotrebnadzor", answering a journalist's question why the factories are still working, if they are in the forbidden zone and operate without due permits, said that "the factories are temporary, and other standards exist for them." To the question how to understand the word "temporary" the official explained that the facilities will stand there till 2011.

According to Mr Orobei, he does not know precisely to what extent the operation of these factories is hazardous; therefore respective measurements are now underway.

The animal of the Imereti Lowland, which is a unique natural landscape and habitat of many significant species, will be resettled, according to the offered project, to the ornithological park having the area of 247 hectares. However, already then local residents marked that if the area had been allocated it should have been fenced; but even then there was no single zone of that area available.

A year after the end of the Caucasus war, Russia still ignores a vast part of an agreement signed by Nicolas Sarkozy and Dmitry Medvedev.

The “six point plan” agreed upon by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev last August, and, a month later, an amended “three point plan” is still mostly ignored by the Kremlin. The deal was not based on strictly formulated rules, but rather postulates, often ambiguous. That helped Russia explain its violations of the settlement.  Russia did not stop the cease-fire completely, but only limited its scale, unlike Georgia. There are also some problems with the Russian withdrawal “to the lines held prior to the outbreak of hostilities.” The country’s military forces did withdraw, but did not restore the pre-war conditions in the region.

Russians deployed a number of troops in Abkhazia and South Ossetia, exceeding the size of the peace-keeping forces that were there before the conflict. The territories in the regions, inhabited by Georgians and controlled by Tibilisi, were not returned to Georgia either. One such place is the Kodori Gorge, a crucial hot spot for military conflict in the area.
